Real Unhate, by Eduardo Salles.

Rivals, unite: Real Madrid x Barcelona. Manchester United x Liverpool. Boca Juniors x River Plate. América x Chivas. Inter x Milan. That’s the message.

Some will see these 5 hybrids of club crests as borderline blasphemy. After all, El Clásico is just around the corner and hatred is in the air. But why not embrace the discomfort? Sure, rivalries create some of the game’s highest highs and lowest lows. As Mexican artist Eduardo Salles states, “Politicians kiss one another, but true Unhate is shown in fútbol.” Salles is an optimist, of course. He sees the brotherhood that connects us all to the beautiful game and thinks this transcends any rivalry. That’s debatable, but here’s to looking at rivals through a new lens…

He’s back!
Antonio Cassano, the crazy Italian genius - The forward has completed a remarkable recovery and return to football following crucial heart surgery. After a 6 month absence Cassano appeared on the fields earlier this month, today he started and scored for AC Milan once more. Actually, twice more! Bentornato!
On the 7th of April Cassano wore the iconic black and red striped Milan jersey again, a ritual he never expected to repeat following a post-match stroke. His late substitute appearance against Fiorentina at the San Siro was a proud moment for both football and science. Before returning to action, the Italian international admitted that he thought his career was over, “I was afraid to die, and then past that, I thought about retiring from football.”
Antonio Cassano scored AC Milan’s first goal in their 4-1 victory over Siena. The celebration today was sacred, running to the bench to hug Doctor Rodolfo Tavana, a man who he claims that saved his life. And 3 minutes later he assisted Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Cassano was buzzing. But the best from the number 99 was displayed in the final minute, spinning past 2 defenders to set up Zlatan once again. It’s been the perfect return for the 29 year old, he’s looking better than ever with Euro 2012 only weeks away.
The unforgettable smile has returned to Cassano’s face, let’s hope the same happens to Bolton’s Fabrice Muamba and Aston Villa’s Stiliyan Petrov, alongside all the other footballers and athletes, both professional and recreational, in the world. [posted by DV]

Chelsea fans singing at the Camp Nou an hour after the match ended.

There wasn’t a Barcelona fan in sight. Whether you think the Londoners “parked the bus” or Di Matteo’s tactics worked brilliantly, Chelsea are through the Champions League final in Munich. 95,000 Catalans left the Camp Nou dejected, but an hour after the match ended the traveling Blues were still standing in the stadium’s upper tier and singing for their heroes. It was a stunning, almost eerie moment to see these fans filled with ecstasy above the infamous Més Que Un Club motto.

The title race is back!
Manchester United 4 - 4 Everton - Perfect crosses, glorious goals, last minute wonder saves, free flowing football and constant drama. Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the Premier League!
Probably the best 45 minutes of football seen in a long, long time. The second half was a demonstration of Premier League football at its finest, although La Liga may be dominating Europe and played at superior technical level, the passion displayed today is incomparable. By the 70th minute United were playing like champions, cruising with a 4-2 victory under their control. But the opponent never gave up and after Evra unluckily hit the post, they scored 2 late goals in two minutes to equalize a thrilling encounter. Unbelievable, unimaginable; but certainly not unexpected.
Both sides played with the objective to the win where Welbeck was sublime combining effectively with Rooney who became United’s 4th all time top scorer. The men in blue were equally magnificent with Jelavic consistently tormenting, Fellaini powerfully performing like a king and experienced right back Hibbert crossing like Beckham. United had the chances to win, but their amateur defending cost them another 2 crucial points. On the other side of the field, credit must be awarded to David Moyes and his tireless Everton team who displayed infinite collective determination.
The title race is pumping again and Ferguson is fuming as his Manchester United have accumulated 1 point from their last two matches, but they’re still in the lead. Now the attention focusses on the Molineux Stadium where Wolves host Manchester City. In theory, this is an easy win for the visitors or will the Premier League spark another Sunday surprise? [posted by DV]

It’s back… Who’s ready for another Clásico?

We didn’t forget. No, these past four months have felt like an El Clásico continuum that has taken over football. The media frenzy has spun entirely out of control, but nevertheless tomorrow is, once again, worth the hype.

If Barcelona doesn’t win another Clásico, then Real Madrid’s path to their first La Liga title since 2008 becomes ever-so-simple, like finishing a race in Mario Kart with Star Power. José Mourinho and Pep Guardiola both have one eye on the Champions League, but on Saturday night the spotlight shines entirely on the Camp Nou.

Here are some handpicked reading recommendations to help make your level of anticipation resemble geeks who sleep outside Apple stores waiting for the new iPhone:

  • Graham Hunter on why Saturday’s Clásico offers redemption [ESPN]
  • Ryan O’Hanlon has an imaginary conversation with a generic American about why the Clásico is a good time [Vice]
  • Jonathan Wilson on why Barcelona’s tactics keep everyone guessing [Fox]
  • The strange ownership structure of Barcelona helps them succeed [Forbes]
  • Sid Lowe on how easily Real Madrid score despite being called defensive [The Guardian]

Without further ado, what do you think will happen between the world’s greatest rivals? [Posted by EB, image via]

The Burning House

The concept of this tumblr is awesome.  It asks “What would you take with you if youre house was on fire?”

Easy enough question.  All it asks is for a list of things and a picture of all those things.  It started out really great, but now I’ll be blunt.  Its crap.  Just go look at some of the pictures on there:

http://theburninghouse.com/

Most of them are from people who are “graphic designer” “photographer” or some other artsy job.  If you look at the content you should realize that unless these people have all this stuff in a box labeled “take in event of fire”  there is no way that they will be able to grab all of that stuff.  Especially the people who are taking 5 different types of cameras.

If a building is on fire I’m grabbing a bag stuffing it with like 7 or 8 really important things tops and getting the heck out.

Stupid hipsters
